Andre pulled up alongside his fishing boat and cut the motor. He tied the dinghy to the boat. The boat was a lot larger than Cheryl had expected. When Andre mentioned a small fishing boat, she’d imagined something small. Really small. This boat was a decent size. She guessed it was around 38 to 40 feet and had a cabin. Her father had a similar boat when she was a kid. She used to love it when they’d go fishing on his Canyon 376 for a weekend. Her mother was a little less enthusiastic and often stayed home.

As long as Cheryl took Dramamine for her motion sickness, she was good to go for the weekend and loved spending time at sea, especially when she was allowed to bring a friend with her. Those were good memories. She hadn’t been on a boat since her early teens, and she truly hoped this nightmare wouldn’t replace her fond memories of boating with her father.

“Something’s not right,” Andre said while quickly pulling himself up onto the boat. “Stay here.”

The little boy let out a whimper.

“It’s alright.” Cheryl patted his arm. Her heart ached for the children. She couldn’t even begin to imagine what they were going through. She then realized she didn’t know their names. “I’m Cheryl,” she said softly. What are your names?”

“James,” the boy said, and then nudged his sister. She turned her head away from Cheryl, not wanting to look at her. Cheryl looked from James to his sister and noticed for the first time how much they looked alike. They had the same sandy blonde hair and facial features. She hadn’t noticed before.

“Are you twins?”

James nodded.

“How old are you?”

“Eight.”

“Eight and a half,” the little girl corrected him, still not looking at Cheryl.

“Eight and a half,” James repeated. “And her name is Lizzie.”

“It is not!” The girl turned her head and made eye contact with Cheryl. “My name is Elizabeth. Only my mom and dad can call me Lizzie.” She stuck her chin out.

“I call you Lizzie!” James said.

“And you. No one else is allowed to call me that.”

“I think Elizabeth is a beautiful name,” Cheryl said.

“We’re twins, but I’m older than my brother.”

James nodded. “She was born first.”

“I see,” Cheryl said. “I always wished I had a twin.”

Andre returned and kneeled on the edge of the boat while looking down at them. “Let’s have the children climb up first.” He glanced over his shoulder and then at the sky. He leaned forward extending his hand to them. “Quickly.”

“James,” Cheryl said, trying to keep her voice quiet. She didn’t want to draw unwanted attention, and she was doing her best to keep the children calm even though she was freaking out inside her head. “How about you climb up first?”

James got to his feet and clutched hold of Andre’s hand. Cheryl helped him by pushing him up and making sure he didn’t fall backward. She then helped Elizabeth to her feet and up onto the boat. Andre leaned down and held out his hand.
